LaGrange is a city in and the county seat of Troup County, Georgia, United States. The population of the city was estimated to be thirty,305 in 2019 by the U.South. Census Bureau.^[five] It is the main urban center of the LaGrange, Georgia Micropolitan Statistical Surface area, which is included in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Gainesville, Georgia-Alabama (part) Combined Statistical Area. Information technology is most 60 miles (97 km) southwest of Atlanta and located in the foothills of the Georgia Piedmont.^[6]

LaGrange is habitation to LaGrange College, the oldest private college in the state. Started as a girls' academy, information technology has been affiliated since the late 19th century with the Methodist Church, and what is now the N Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. LaGrange is named after the state estate nigh Paris of the wife of the Marquis de La Fayette. When La Fayette, a Revolutionary War hero, visited Georgia in 1825 on a national tour, he remarked on the similarity of local topography to his wife's property.^{[half dozen]}

LaGrange is governed by a mayor and six-person metropolis council. The mayor is elected citywide (at-large). Three council members are elected to i post each from each of 2 council districts, designated as 1a, 1b, and 1c from the offset district, with similar naming for posts in the second district.^[14] Candidates must declare for a post in ane of the districts at the time of their filing, and must win a majority to be elected. In Jan 2017, Constabulary Principal Louis M. Dekmar apologized publicly for his section'south failure in 1940 to protect a 16-year-old black youth, who was lynched. Few law enforcement officials accept ever apologized for such events. Mayor Jim Thornton also apologized and stressed the city'southward commitment to improving conditions.^[18]

"I sincerely regret and denounce the role our Police Department played in Austin'south lynching, both through our action and our inaction," Primary Dekmar told a crowd at a traditionally African-American church building. "And for that, I'm profoundly sorry. It should never have happened."^[xviii]

Descendants of the Callaway family, wealthy planters in the antebellum years, established a philanthropic foundation. The Troup County School Organization holds pre-school to grade 12, and consists of fifteen simple schools, three middle schools (Callaway Heart School, Gardner Newman Centre School, and Long Cane Heart Schoolhouse), and three loftier schools (Callaway High School, LaGrange Loftier Schoolhouse, and Troup County Comprehensive High School. The county is divided into three school zones. The county school organization serves Hogansville, LaGrange and Due west Signal. It is dwelling house to over 20 new and recently renovated schools.

  Built in 1939, the old Troup County Courthouse is yet in use today as the Juvenile Courthouse. The jail behind it was torn down in 2001 when the Troup County Government Center was built. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 8, 1995.
